This study primarily aims to question the concept of the “Filipino-ness of childhood” in Adarna House picture books using Roland Barthes’ theory of semiotics (or mythology). It seeks to demythologize the terms “Filipino-ness” and “childhood,” which may take on the appearance of being “obvious” or “natural,” but which are politically loaded terms. According to Barthes, it is the myth (or mythical speech) which “naturalizes” the ideologies or constructs in society so that they appear as “common sense.” In line with this, this thesis will analyze selected Adarna picture books and demythologize the mythical speeches of patriarchy, capitalism/bourgeoisie, and neo-colonialism perpetuated in them.
